“Railways play an important role in the growth of the country and copper is indispensible for the modernization of Railway network as well as its electrification programme”, said Mr. Arun Kumar Shukla, Director (Operations), Hindustan Copper Ltd. during his address as the Chief Guest of the Seminar on “Copper Based Products for Railways – Present Status and Future Prospects”, held in Kolkata on 27th November, 2019. He also praised Indian Copper Development Centre (ICDC) for arranging such focussed seminars on technology development, newer application areas, etc.
Mr. Thomas Schatz, Sr. Sales Manager – Copper Plants, SMS group GmbH, Germany, addressed the participants as a Special Guest of the seminar. He mentioned about the requirement of various copper based alloys required by the Railways and the need for technological development for making those alloys.
The opening session commenced with the address by Dr. D. De Sarkar, CEO, Indian Copper Development Centre, who elaborated the background & activities of ICDC and also welcomed the participants. The session concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. Indrajit Mukherjee, Metallurgist, ICDC.

There were two Technical Sessions during the seminar which were chaired by Dr. D. De Sarkar and Mr. Lalit Kumar Pahwa, Managing Director, Pahwa MetalTech Pvt. Ltd. respectively. After each technical session there was very lively discussion session when the authors answered the various queries raised by the audience.
About 50 participants attended the seminar. They included representatives from different Railway organisations, primary copper producers, copper based product manufacturers for the railways, engineering institutes, metallurgical start-ups, etc.
