METALLURGY OF

COPPER & COPPER ALLOYS

Hotel Atithi

(Adjacent to Domestic Airport)

Mumbai

8th & 9th May, 2012

Organised by

INDIAN COPPER DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

BACKGROUND

Several requests from industry are received by ICDC to look for Metallurgists with good knowledge on processing of Copper & Copper Alloys.  Such requests came from organizations having qualified engineers, as also from smaller units having mostly experienced production personnel.

It is known that the academic institutes in India offering B.E. / B.Tech. Degree in Metallurgy / Metallurgical Engineering /  Materials Science do not give any special thrust on Metallurgy of Copper & Copper Alloys.  It  is covered only as a part of Non-Ferrous Metallurgy – which also  includes, aluminium, zinc, titanium, etc.

It has also been noticed that in a production unit, for obvious reasons, the   primary objective of executives / supervisors is to meet production target / delivery schedule.  They get hardly any scope to apply their analytical skill based on metal’s / alloy’s basic change in behaviour due to change in chemical composition, processing route / parameter as also thermal treatments.

It is thus necessary for production units to identify a few personnel and impart required knowledge on copper and copper alloy metallurgy.

OBJECTIVE

To impart basic knowledge on metallurgy of copper and copper alloys among personnel associated with manufacture of different types of copper and copper alloy products.

This will benefit respective organizations in  : -

  • Developing in-house knowledge pool
  • Understanding effect of process parameter variation vis-a-vis materials'

           response (both positive & negative)

  • Selection of appropriate raw materials for a given product
  • Adjusting alloy composition within the given range - leading to commercial  benefits
  • Failure analysis and taking remedial measures
  • Helping customers to overcome misconcepts on material composition selection, properties required, etc.

COURSE COVERAGE

The following coverage has been designed by ICDC officers and senior faculty of metallurgical engineering, after a careful study and analysis of the need of the industry, based on their feed back and suggestions received sequel to the earlier courses :

-                      Understanding metals and materials

-                      Metallurgy of copper and its relevance to production

-                      Alloying – role of Phase Diagram and its advantages in alloy selection & processing

-                      Metallurgy of hot working processes

-                      Metallurgy of cold working processes

-                      Thermal treatment – material behaviour during stress relieving, annealing, age hardening, etc.

-                      Chemical properties, surface protection, pickling, oxidation, tarnishing, etc.

-                      Testing techniques – destructive and non-destructive

-                      Newer concepts – both process (viz., continuous casting, etc.) and material

ABOUT THE COURSE

-                      The 2-day course (9.00 a.m. to 5.00  p.m.  each day) will be conducted by two faculty.

-                      There will be about 8 lectures spread over two days with ample time for    participants to seek clarifications.

-                      For closer interaction each course will have about 20 participants. Thus participation for this course will be on First Come, First Served  basis.

-                      The course is a roving type, i.e. it is conducted in various parts of the country for the convenience of the industries around the region depending on response.

-                      The course may be repeated in the same region for additional batch of participants depending on demand.

EXPECTED BACKGROUND OF THE PARTICIPANTS

-                      Working in copper / copper alloy unit

-                      Communication capability in English

-                      Academic qualification  :  While a formal degree / diploma in any branch of engineering is not  mandatory, - a graduate degree or  intimate knowledge on process and practice is preferable.
